How to Correctly Put a Slip Lead on a Dog

A slip lead is a practical tool for training and controlling your dog, but it’s important to use it correctly to ensure your dog’s comfort and safety.

  1. Form the loop: Hold the handle and pass the lead through the metal ring, creating a loop that will go over your dog’s head.
  2. Position the lead: Slip the loop over your dog’s head, positioning it just behind the ears. This high position gives you better control and helps guide your dog more effectively.
  3. Right orientation: Make sure the lead forms a “P” shape when facing the dog on your left. This ensures the lead will loosen immediately when your dog stops pulling, preventing constant pressure.
  4. Check fit: The lead should fit snugly but not tightly. You want enough slack so the dog can move freely without feeling choked, but with enough control to give corrections when needed. You should be able to get your fingers between the lead and your dog’s neck, this will enable you to control the lead without choking your dog. If you cannot get your fingers in then adjust the lead.
