How to Correctly Put a Slip Lead on a Dog

A slip lead is a practical tool for training and controlling your dog, but it’s important to use it correctly to ensure your dog’s comfort and safety.

  1. Form the loop: Hold the handle and pass the lead through the metal ring, creating a loop that will go over your dog’s head.
  2. Position the lead: Slip the loop over your dog’s head, positioning it just behind the ears. This high position gives you better control and helps guide your dog more effectively.
  3. Right orientation: Make sure the lead forms a “P” shape when facing the dog on your left. This ensures the lead will loosen immediately when your dog stops pulling, preventing constant pressure.
  4. Check fit: The lead should fit snugly but not tightly. You want enough slack so the dog can move freely without feeling choked, but with enough control to give corrections when needed. You should be able to get your fingers between the lead and your dog’s neck, this will enable you to control the lead without choking your dog. If you cannot get your fingers in then adjust the lead.

Using a slip lead this way ensures both effective communication during training and your dog’s comfort.

Benefits of Using a Slip Lead

A slip lead offers several advantages, especially in training and walking:

  • Simple to use: Slip leads are easy to put on and take off, making them convenient for quick outings or transitions.
  • Effective training tool: When used correctly, the lead helps you gently correct pulling behavior by applying and releasing pressure.
  • Versatile: Suitable for different breeds and sizes, slip leads can be adjusted to fit securely around the dog’s neck.
  • No need for a collar: Slip leads act as both a collar and a leash, which is useful for quick handling or when dogs are between collars.

Slip leads are a great choice for control, simplicity, and training when used properly.
